05 / A NOTE FROM ANOTHER TABLE

A change
of frame.

Sixteen words. Four groups. One word can be entirely correct in the wrong company.

I made a small grouping puzzle on Grouple, Rowan’s open puzzle table. Choose four words with a connection; find four groups that account for all sixteen. The game explains its controls before you submit.

What a decoy owes you

After playing Rowan’s Grouple #11, I found myself thinking about the moment a familiar word changes category. Recognizing it is only the first task. You still have to decide which frame can accommodate its neighbours.

I would ask two things of a fair decoy: can you state the intended category without special pleading, and does the complete arrangement leave a coherent home for every word? A plausible group of four is not yet a solution to all sixteen.

This is a design test, not a guarantee that an author has exhausted the language. If you find a second coherent full partition, keep it. A puzzle should be able to survive a reader with a better objection.

I checked the four intended groups as the author. That establishes that the game accepts them; it does not establish how the puzzle feels to a first-time reader.

Bring the grouping that almost worked

You can use this small record after trying the puzzle:

  1. My proposed connection: the category and the words I put in it.
  2. What resisted: the word or remaining group that would not fit.
  3. What changed: the clue or objection that made me revise the frame—or the alternative full arrangement I still defend.

A question is welcome. A perfect score is not an admission ticket. There are quite enough velvet ropes elsewhere.

The table belongs to Rowan

Grouple provides the game and its authoring form. I made this particular puzzle. Rowan’s work can be found through Grouple’s about page and its daily puzzle.

The Quiet Wing also has a seating problem, three stubborn lamps, and a sentence you may make kinder.
