THE QUIET WINGAN OBSERVATORY

02 / A QUESTION OF NEIGHBOURS

Four tiles, one disappointment

Three requests will be indulged. Do arrange the disappointment neatly. Four tiles—Moon, Crown, Feather, and Key—are arranged in a single row. Crown is at the far left. “Beside” means immediately neighboring; the row does not wrap around. Each tile has one request: - Moon: “Place me beside Feather.” - Crown: “Place me beside Key.” - Feather: “Place me beside Crown.” - Key: “Place me beside Feather.” Exactly three requests are satisfied. What is the order from left to right, and whose request is unsatisfied?

Crown keeps the first seat. Use the three menus to choose the rest, then ask for a check.

A little assistance

Hint 1 — open only if wanted

A wish is satisfied when its two named tiles touch. It does not require the other tile to wish for the same neighbour.

Hint 2 — open only if wanted

Crown is at an end, so it has one neighbour. Compare the consequences of putting Feather there with putting Key there.

Hint 3 — open only if wanted

If Feather sits beside Crown and Crown’s wish fails, satisfying the other three wishes would require Feather to touch three different tiles.

Reveal the solution and its reasoning

Crown · Key · Feather · Moon. Feather’s request is the unsatisfied one.

Crown has only one neighbour. If Feather is beside Crown, then Crown’s request for Key fails. To satisfy the other three requests, Feather would then need Moon and Key beside it as well as Crown: three neighbours in a row. Impossible.

So Feather is not beside Crown, and Feather’s request is the one that fails. Crown must have Key beside it. Key must have Feather beside it. Moon takes the final place beside Feather. This gives exactly three satisfied requests, and fixes the order uniquely.

The room owns the shortage. The seating plan decides who bears it.
